Probably the greatest example of persistence is Abraham Lincoln. If you want to learn about somebody who didn’t quit, look no further. Born into poverty, Lincoln was faced with defeat throughout his life. He lost eight elections, twice failed in business and suffered a nervous breakdown. He could have quit many times – but he didn’t and because he didn’t quit, he became one of the greatest presidents in the history of our country. Lincoln was a champion and he never gave up. JOHN 16:23,24 23 And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ASK THE FATHER in my name, he will give it you. 24 Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full. In John 14:13,14 the Greek word for “ask” implies to demand as something due. In other words, we could say, “And whatsoever you shall demand in My Name, that will I do…” (John 14:13). Spiritual things are very similar to natural things. Jesus took natural things to explain spiritual things. No one is going to be an expert or keen in any area without working at it. In the area of sports, for instance, a person who is known for his high batting average, for his hitting ability, did not get to his position without many hours of batting practice. On the news I once heard about a fellow whose batting average had been way down, but by much hard work and practice he had brought it up. This parable is told of a farmer who owned an old mule. The mule fell into the farmer’s well. The farmer heard the mule praying or whatever mules do when they fall into wells. After carefully assessing the situation, the farmer sympathized with the mule, but decided that neither the mule nor the well was worth the trouble of saving. Instead, he called his neighbors together, told them what had happened, and enlisted them to help haul dirt to bury the old mule in the well and put him out of his misery.
